When doing an assistive technology (AT) consult, it is crucial to make sure that you have everything you need to work with students in a way that works best for them. With so many options out there, how do you make sure that you have everything you need?
We compiled a list of items that would be a good idea to have on hand during an AT consult. Adjust the list to fit your budget and school’s current accessibility library. As always, the items that will be best are the ones that align with what your school and students need the most.
Accessories and Supplies for an AT Consult
Computers
A new, up-to-date computer is a must for an AT consult. If possible, have both a Windows-based computer and a Mac. It might also be a good idea to have a Chromebook on hand if those are popular with your district or student population.
No matter what type of computer you have, it is imperative to have the latest operating system and to be sure it can handle the resources needed for the newest assistive technology programs.
Tablets
Not only is it a good idea to have the latest tablet – specifically an iPad – that can work with the newest AT apps, but it is also smart to have it in a variety of sizes. The combination of sizes can help students with different needs and give you a wide range of options for working with students.
Many older iPads cannot handle the latest apps’ workload, so a new version is a must if it is in your budget.

Wireless Keyboards and Mice
A keyboard and mouse separate from the computer itself can be an essential tool for students. If using a wireless keyboard, make sure that you have various sizes to make it accessible to a wide range of students.
The same sizing concern is valid for a wireless mouse. A larger mouse may be more comfortable for some students to grasp and manipulate. Having different options gives you more accurate information and helps your students be more successful.
Multiple Access Options
Not every student can access information in the same way. For an AT consult, have the software and low-tech options that allow for scanning, head tracking, eye tracking, and more. Speakprose is an option for face and eye-tracking software that works on the newest version of the iPad and could be useful during a consult.
Stylus
A stylus can help students access information and technology, so it is essential to have one available during an AT consult. If possible, have different size styluses available in various point sizes.
A Toolkit
When you are doing an AT consult, the last thing you want is not to have something you need if your tools break. A small toolkit is an essential part of your teacher bag when you head out. Simple scissors, a screwdriver, batteries in various sizes, charging cables, connectors, and hook and eye strips could all be included.
Stock up on the supplies and technology that make the most sense for your school’s student population. You will get the most out of the things that work well for your students versus things that are just a technology fad. Also, be sure to take your time when packing and preparing for an AT consult to ensure that you have everything you need. Your consult will be amazing!
