It’s no secret that IEP writing is a specialized ed teacher’s kryptonite…

There is a massive gap between the tools special education teachers are given to write impactful IEPs & the outcome they’re expected to deliver.

But what if you could confidently write measurable & attainable IEPs that help your students make leaps and bounds towards their goals…

Without losing hours of your weekend (every weekend), wrestling with admin pushback, or sacrificing the care and resources your students need?

But what if you could confidently write measurable & attainable IEPs that help your students make leaps and bounds towards their goals…

Without losing hours of your weekend (every weekend), wrestling with admin pushback, or sacrificing the care and resources your students need?

There are SO many hurdles to jump each time you sit down to write an intentional and effective IEP.

And even though the Sunday night Band-Aid solutions from good old Professor Google *might* give you a quick-fix, they won’t set you or your students up for long-term success.

Because…

Despite rolling into school early, staying long after the final bell, and scarfing down your soggy sandwich so you can work through lunch…

The fact of the matter is:

There aren’t enough hours in the day to do your job and do it well.

It’s already tough enough to create individualized plans, collect data, monitor progress, and tackle a pile of paperwork that are forming a mini-mountain on your desk…all while giving every student the attention they deserve.

But on top of that…

  • …You’re short-staffed and have a classroom full of students that demand your attention at all hours of the day…

  • …It feels like you’re on an island of one, constantly getting pushback from admin and gen ed, but seriously lacking the data you need to support your goals…

  • …You’re stuck in an endless cycle of trying to link your present levels to findings and link your findings to your goals…

  • …You spend any “extra” free time scavenging the depths of the internet in the hopes that you can find goals, strategies, and resources to speed up the process…

  • …Only to find half-baked advice and tips more generic than that store-brand corn flakes.

Because…

  • …Only to find half-baked advice and tips more generic than that store-brand corn flakes.

And, no matter how many questions you ask your fellow teachers, hours you pour into research, or money you spend on books and resources…

You’re still spending your precious free time in IEP writing hell.

Which leaves you stuck in an endless loop of last-minute planning, pencil-pushing, and running on the hamster wheel to burnout.

And the truth is, many of us feel like we’re set up to fail.

Because it doesn’t matter how many times you stay after school late, wake up early, or sacrifice yet another weekend spa day to finish up that pile of IEPs…

No one ever gave you the tools to write IEPs that advance your students’ education, boost their employment, and set them up for independent living (<– ya know, that thing they expect us to do).

So you don’t have what you need to produce successful outcomes again and again.

In reality, you need a faster way to write IEPs–not just that meet compliance requirements–but are also backed by research and individualized so you can advocate for your students.

You need an efficient method for writing intentional IEPs that work for YOUR students.

And after all the blood, sweat, and certifications you deserve to have the tools you need to create intentional IEPs again and again.

The thing is…

An intentional IEP goal works like magic wands: they are measurable, attainable, and individualized for each student.

But under-developed IEP goals are like a busted car engine: they prevent forward momentum (and might blow up in your face).

At the end of the day, IEP goals determine whether or not the student gets the support they need. They are the thing that can make or break a student’s progress.

But when you have a STREAMLINED & SIMPLE system and support that allows you to consistently write smart, attainable, and research-based goals…

Writing your IEPs becomes as simple as: Copy > Paste > Present

Using an intentional system will put you on the path to creating IEPs that advocate for your students…without sacrificing your weekends, your sanity, or your job.

Because no matter what…

Fueled by a passion for your students, an unrivaled work ethic, and the occasional triple shot espresso, you won’t rest until you’ve created IEPs that align with your student’s needs.

Once you do that, the rest is easy peasy. You can walk into your IEP meetings with the swagger and unwavering enthusiasm of a kid with an A+ report card.

Using a repeatable system not only allows you to impact your students’ lives at a higher level, but it also gives you hours and HOURS of your week back to do frivolous things like sleeping for more than 4 hours a night…

And dare I say it…

Have a personal life (gasp!)
IEPs don’t have to be a barrier. Done right, they can be a path to advocating for your students and helping them reach their potential.

So it’s time to start looking at IEPs as a friend, not a foe.

And if the thought of writing IEPs sends you down a spiral of overwhelm, fear, and confusion…

Then pay attention.

Because you’ve already got all the tools you need to crush your IEPs. You just need someone to show you how to put everything together.

And excuse me for the cheesy quote straight out of High School Musical:

We’re all in this together.

Imagine…

  • Having the energy and capacity to give every student the attention they deserve…

  • Mapping out your lesson plans ahead of time instead of at the final bell…

  • Leaving your work at school and enjoying some much-needed Netflix bingeing you time (hello, weekends!)…

  • Walking into IEP meetings with your head held high knowing you’ve created the best possible plan for your students…

  • Having the data you need to advocate for your students through personalized, research-based IEPs…

  • Cutting your time spent writing IEPs in HALF so you can be more involved in the classroom and give students the attention they deserve…

  • Taking control of your calendar and stop putting your personal life (and your mental health) on the backburner…

  • Knowing you’ve put your best foot forward and created IEPs that open up doors for your students…

Sound too good to be true? It’s not. All you need is a system…

The Three Myths That Might Be Holding Back Your IEP Writing

“It takes hours to write an effective, measurable, and attainable IEP.”

Belieeeeeeve me, I have been there 👆.

As teachers, we live and die by the clock.

But writing good IEPs doesn’t have to be a time suck.

You don’t have to finish your IEPs right at the final buzzer like a college student after an all-nighter in the library.

Because with the right IEP writing process, you can knock out measurable & personalized IEPs in a fraction of the time. So you can stop starting over from scratch and hitting edit-undo every time you try to finalize your draft.

When you invest time in figuring out the right IEP writing system now, you can save time tomorrow. And actually find the time to lesson plan, give your students attention, and clock out at a reasonable hour.

“It’s supposed to be hard.”

Look:

Nobody said being a special education teacher was easy.

And while our days can be filled with unique challenges…

It doesn’t mean that every activity has to be hard.

But so many teachers fall into the trap of thinking that “If something comes easy, I must be doing it wrong.”

So we feel like we have to run a marathon and power through the pain instead of taking a quick and easy jaunt around the block.

There’s no “easy” button when it comes to teaching.

But you can take the path of least resistance to get where you want to go…

…without feeling guilty or like you’re doing something wrong.

And once you have a structure for writing IEPs, you can simplify the process to make it as painless as possible.

“I have to wing it.”

Ever feel like you’re flying by the seat of your Old Navy jeans when writing your IEPs?

You’re not the only one.

Sooooo many of us feel like we’re set up to fail when it comes to their IEP writing…

…Because no one gave us the guidebook to show them how it’s done.

And since IEPs look different depending on the state, district, or school…

Most of the online resources are completely irrelevant to the task at hand…

But you don’t have to throw that bowl of SpaghettiOs at the wall and pray that something sticks every time you write an IEP.

Because even though every student’s situation is unique, the bones of an IEP are the same no matter the circumstance, district, or school.

Once you know the basic anatomy, you can write present levels, goals, and objectives with ease.

As special education teachers…

We rely on others to show us the way and help us in case we get stuck.

And, after a decade of dealing with setbacks and watching my colleagues struggle with troubleshooting solutions on their own…

I decided to do something about it.

So I’m here to lend a helping hand and show you that there’s an easier way to navigate the seemingly tricky world of IEP writing.

I’ve created a system for writing stress-free IEPs that align with student needs. So you can focus your time and energy on other important things.

There’s a formula for IEP writing success.

And if you’re ready to save time, reduce stress, and regain control of your calendar…

Then stick with me.

Because if you truly want to take control of the IEP writing process, then you need to have a system.

You need a system for writing effective and efficient IEPs that work for YOUR students.

You need relevant advice that works with the constantly changing landscape of your state, local, and academic standards.

You need support so you can streamline your process and get back to focusing on your students’ needs (and not just staying compliant and meeting those looming deadlines).

Bottom line?

You need a strong support system so you can advocate for your students through carefully crafted IEPs. And stop piecing together advice that leaves you blindly wandering in circles instead of confidently moving forward.

“Writing IEPs is a daunting task to say the least! Being a special education teacher who writes these documents from scratch can be so overwhelming and time-consuming. Now, with The Intentional IEP, I don’t worry. Templates are available to make sure the correct information is added, goals are functional, achievable and, best yet, measurable by anyone. This website is a life-saver and game-changer!”

Hi. I’m Stephanie DeLussey.

I’m a special education teacher and advocate, Master IEP Coach®, blogger, teacher mentor, and creator of The Intentional IEP Writing Method.

I’ve always been passionate about education. I know how rewarding it is to change students’ lives one lesson at a time. But, after spending nine years in the classroom, it became painfully clear that IEPs were a major barrier for me and my colleagues.

I’ve worked in 5 states in both public and charter school settings. And while every state has different IEP requirements, the general process for writing effective & intentional IEPs is the same.

So I set out to create the most comprehensive content on IEP writing for special education teachers. I’ve spent years perfecting my formula to help teachers save time, reduce stress, and feel more confident with their IEPs.

By following my lessons and using my simple step-by-step approach, you can simplify your IEP writing process. So you can have more time to teach, make a difference in your students’ lives, and dedicate more time to you.

After a decade in the field, I created a blueprint that you can follow to boost your efficiency and jump any hurdles that pop up in your path.

The best part? It’s a simple four-step formula:

Review Data

Present Levels

Aligned Goals

Collect Data

And once you follow that recipe and use some plug-and-play resources, you’ll be on the fast track to improving your IEPs.

As a special ed teacher, your plate of responsibilities is always full (and your cup is always empty). And let’s be real, writing IEPs takes up an entire plate in itself.

Sound familiar 👇?

  • “I have no idea how to write S.M.A.R.T. IEP goals!”

  • “I can’t keep up with the constantly changing IEP requirements!”

  • “When will I get to do what I love… teach?!”

  • “My district never trained me on how to write IEP goals, I’m so lost!”

  • “Writing IEPs takes up way too much of my time. When will the paperwork end?”
  • “My students aren’t making progress and I have no idea what IEP goals to write to get them to skill mastery!”

If you say even one of those phrases in your head every week…The Intentional IEP is for you.

IEP law and regulations can vary widely (and are always changing), but the need for measurable and attainable IEP goals and objectives is persistent.

The IEP goals we use should help the child succeed in school and everyday life activities through a clear and empowering process.

Appropriate, measurable IEP goals will help students get the most out of their education day after day.

With The Intentional IEP, you can finally spend more time with your students building relationships and learning during the school day. And more time building the life YOU want on your time off.

Start writing IEPs in half the time. Today.
