Unpopular opinion 😱 Most IEP goal problems aren't actually IEP goal problems. They're one or more of the following: present level problems, baseline data problems, skill gap problems, standards progression problems, and/or implementation planning problems. The truth is, an IEP goal bank doesn't decide what a student needs. The data does (and the person analyzing the data does). An IEP goal bank can give you options. It can help you save time. It can help you find the right wording. But it can't tell you where the student is starting (baseline), which prerequisite skill is missing, what instruction or SDI they'll need, or even how you'll measure progress. Or 6 goals with 3 or 4 objectives each. This is where prioritizing what skills you're going to be working on comes into play. How do you know what skills to prioritize?
1. Start with having a conversation with the student and their family. What skills do they want to prioritize over the next year?
2. Then take a look at student need (re: Present Levels). Are any of these skills foundational skills that need to be prioritized? Boom. Prioritized.

The difference between accommodation and modificat

The difference between accommodation and modifications is something we are familiar with, but often is very confusing for others. When we are explaining these two terms to other educators and parents, we need to have an easy way that they can understand. A great way to do this is to give examples. Accommodations change the HOW, while modifications change the WHAT. Examples:
Accommodations - large print text, reteaching concepts, working in pairs or small groups, use of a calculator, extended time, and flexible seating. Modifications - use of a different grading rubric, modifying the format of a test or activity, modifying the reading level, change of student expectations, and reduced complexity of an activity. ⭐️ Before diving in to a IEP meeting, make sure that you take the time to explain to all present what the difference is between modifications and accommodations.
