The IEP can check every compliance box and still not be helping the student. Let's paint a picture: A teacher sits down to prepare for progress reports. The goals are there, accommodations listed, services scheduled. Check, check, and check... the paperwork was complete. But as she starts gathering data, she runs into a problem. She isn't entirely sure what progress she's supposed to be measuring. 🤷‍♀️ Sound familiar? Maybe you've felt like this, and maybe it was because the IEP goals felt disconnected from the student's actual needs, or the accommodations didn't seem related to the challenges described in the present levels. Nothing is technically "wrong"... but nothing is working together either. And now you realize: an IEP can be compliant and still be ineffective. Whether that looks like it's difficult to implement, hard to progress monitor, not parts being connected, or even just not truly meaningful for the student... ineffective is ineffective. At the beginning and end of the day compliance answers the question: "Did we include everything required?" A quality IEP answers the question: "Will this actually help the student make progress?" ❌ Those are not the same thing. ❌ The best IEPs do more than satisfy requirements and meet compliance. The IEPs you write need to tell a clear story. That means your present levels identify a need or needs, the IEP goals address the need, and services and supports then support the IEP goals and remove barriers. And you use progress monitoring to measure growth. Everything works together. Because students deserve more than a compliant document of 40+ stapled pages together.
