The goal of an educational evaluation is to understand how a student learns, where and how they're struggling, what their strengths and needs are, and whether they need specially designed instruction or supports to make progress and be successful. A good evaluation gives the IEP team the information they need to make informed decisions. Agree or disagree?

Would you rather spend 20 minutes reviewing a draft IEP before the meeting… or 2 hours debating it during the meeting? One of the biggest misconceptions about draft IEPs is that they’re only for parents. They’re not. Draft IEPs help the entire team. When teachers, providers, administrators, and parents have an opportunity to review information beforehand, something powerful happens: The meeting shifts from processing information to discussing information. Instead of reading goals for the first time, you’re refining them. Instead of reacting to proposed services, you’re discussing them. Instead of defending recommendations, you’re explaining the rationale behind them. That’s where collaboration lives. The most successful IEP meetings aren’t successful because everyone agrees. They’re successful because everyone comes prepared. Prepared teams ask better questions.
Prepared teams communicate better.
Prepared teams solve problems faster.
Prepared teams make better decisions for students. A draft IEP doesn’t eliminate disagreement. But it does eliminate unnecessary surprises. And fewer surprises usually means more trust, better communication, and more productive conversations. The goal of an IEP meeting should not be to reveal information.
